Atari 7800

Atari 7800 home console.

System Name: Atari 7800 ProSystem

Manufacturer: Atari Corporation

Originally designed in 1984, but officially launched in 1986 in North America after delays.

The Atari 7800 was Atari’s attempt to reclaim its place in the gaming market after the 1983 video game crash and the struggles of the 5200. Designed to be backward compatible with the massive Atari 2600 library, the 7800 offered improved 8-bit graphics that could rival Nintendo’s NES in some areas. However, due to poor marketing, software shortages, and fierce competition from Nintendo and Sega, the 7800 never gained much traction. Despite this, it built a small but loyal fanbase and is remembered today as a solid but underappreciated system.

Approximately 3,770,000 units were sold worldwide.

The Atari 7800 contributed about 5% or less to Atari’s total video game income — much lower than the 2600, and it marked the end of Atari’s dominance in the home console market.
