PSP

PSP handheld console.

System Name: PlayStation Portable (PSP)

Manufacturer: Sony Computer Entertainment

Released in 2004 in Japan and 2005 in North America and Europe.

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) was Sony’s first handheld gaming console, bringing near-PlayStation 2-quality graphics to a portable device. It stood out with its multimedia capabilities, allowing users to play games, watch movies, listen to music, and browse the web. The PSP introduced the UMD (Universal Media Disc) format for games and movies, offering a rich library including titles like God of War: Chains of Olympus, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. Despite strong competition from Nintendo’s handhelds, the PSP carved out a loyal fanbase and was particularly successful in Japan.

Approximately 82,000,000 units sold worldwide.

The PSP contributed about 20% of Sony’s gaming revenue during its active years. While not as dominant globally as Sony’s home consoles, the PSP was a commercial success, especially considering it was their first handheld and managed to stand strong against the Nintendo DS.
